The mission of the Ecosystems Mission Area ofthe U.S. Geological Survey is to work with others to provide the scientificunderstanding and technologies needed to support the sound management andconservation of our Nation’s biological resources. Fulfilling this mission depends oneffectively balancing the immediate need for information to guide management ofbiological resources with the need for technical assistance and long-range,strategic information to understand and predict emerging patterns and trends inecological systems. Ecosystem MissionArea programs were developed to provide the appropriate depth and breadth ofobjective science to meet the information needs of natural resource managers, who encounter many complex environmental problems driven by an array ofbiological, physical, social, and economic forces that interact across diversetemporal and spatial scales.
The primary responsibility of the USGS is toassist natural resource and land managers, particularly in the Department ofthe Interior, by providing them with sound biological information and withassistance in applying the information to their needs. The primary means of gathering thisinformation is through the use of scientific methods applied to monitoringresources and conducting experiments. Subsequently, pertinent information must be made available to those who must use it to makeimportant natural resource management decisions.
