Job Summary

This posting is for a high-level Academic Student Services Manager for the International Institute (II). We are seeking an experienced and dynamic leader who can partner with the II Director, Chief Administrator and II colleagues to create an effective and robust student services structure to support and promote our student population.

The Academic Services Manager works closely with the Institute Director and Chief Administrator to help accomplish the mission, vision and goals of the Institute in regards to fellowships and academic services.

Create a sustainable student services infrastructure and provide strategic leadership and direction for the International Institute's program initiatives related to student and faculty fellowships, graduate and undergraduate student services.

Provide oversight for all matters related to graduate and undergraduate student affairs - advising, curriculum and course scheduling, Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) recruitment and hiring, and all student related initiatives.

Develop and lead a highly functional, collaborative team with a focus on creating an innovative academic services office to meet the needs of students from all UM’s schools and colleges.

Provide oversight for the admissions process for six master’s degree programs, joint MA programs and one new accelerated master’s degree program.

Lead efforts for planning, initiating, directing and assessing the outcomes of the Institute’s student initiatives, services, activities and programs.

Implement use of technology to create efficiencies and enhance the delivery of services and programs.

Manage portfolio of accounts totaling more than $4M per year; including fellowship and research funding and graduate funding.

Collaborate with units across UM to administer high profile, national fellowship programs such as Department of State U.S. Student Fulbright Program, FLAS fellowship, and II Individual Fellowships.

Direct transparent and equitable selection process for II fellowships. Manage funds, award letters and contracts. Review and update policies related to funding. Represent the University to peer institutions and to external funding agencies.

Direct all aspects of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Work with the Institute of International Education (IIE) to meet the Department of State and Department of Defense regulations; interpret government policies; convene faculty interview committees (90+ faculty participants; 45+ committees); prepare and authorize interview results for 140+ applicants.

In collaboration with the II Director, Rackham Graduate School and partners across UM, develop new program initiatives to support international education.

Oversee the marketing and recruitment activities aimed at students and the University community. Lead team efforts in the design and execution of 40+ information sessions each year aimed at educating the UM community regarding funding opportunities that support international education and research. Plan outreach events, attend promotional fairs, publicize successful grantees and communicate with potential applicants.

Foster collaboration and collegiality across the II, building strong relationships with faculty and staff within the Institute and across the University.

Create a culture that offers outstanding customer service not only to students but to faculty and staff with the Institute and across all levels of the University and beyond.

Interpret academic policies and provide guidance to staff, faculty and students in the implementation of new or changing policies.

Serve on College and University committees

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Extensive administrative experience in an academic department including experience with administrative support of instructional activities.

Three to five years of previous work experience in student services administration.

Extensive administrative experience in an academic department, including experience with administrative support of instructional activities and graduate funding mechanisms (multi-year budgeting, projection and analysis).

Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written with demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive matters/materials and to produce original documents of high quality.

Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and successfully meet deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with demonstrated commitment to creating a positive work environment.

Commitment to customer service.

Demonstrated initiative to gather information, analyze data and problem-solve both independently and as part of a team.

Excellent computer skills and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Desired Qualifications*

A Master’s degree in Higher Education, or a related field.

At least five years of student services experience within the University and three or more years of managerial experience.

In-depth knowledge of University, Rackham and College of LSA policies and procedures.

Experience with supervision, training and selection, student conduct, crisis response, educational programming, working with faculty, and working with a diverse population.

Demonstrated success training staff on new models and designing a new area of work in a higher education arena.

Additional Information

The target salary range for this position is $61,000-$71,000. The actual salary offered may be higher based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
