Heartland Payment Systems, Inc. Payroll Tax Manager in Birmingham, Michigan


The Tax Manager is responsible for the tax operations team in their local Tax office. This role includes staff planning, continued evaluation of staff performance, development of staff and workload management of the tax supervisors and tax specialist roles. Engaging and collaborating with members of other tax department locations, payroll operations, and sales teams to effectively service clients is key to success in this role.

Job Details:


  • Effectively utilize staff to appropriately perform and meet business needs to ensure accurate and timely payment of payroll taxes and filing of agency returns for tax clients

  • Ensure compliance with payroll tax filing regulatory requirements

  • Coach and develop staff members; assigning workloads, arranging work schedules to ensure necessary coverage, monitoring staff performance, managing staff development and conducting performance evaluations, both on-going and annually

  • Communicate openly and thoroughly with staff members, peer managers from other operation teams, directors and vice presidents

  • Motivate and engage staff to work efficiently and cohesively promote the overall team environment

  • Resolve complex tax issues and client concerns as escalated from staff and other departments

  • Provide support to Heartland sales and payroll staff regarding tax issues

  • Identify methods to improve processes and increase efficiency and implement as directed

  • Other tasks as assigned or requested


  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills required

  • Ability to ensure agency deadlines and client needs are met

  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and determine proper business decisions affecting staff as well as clients

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong tax research and comprehension ability

  • Working knowledge of payroll, wage and tax laws, and IRS/State regulations required

  • Working knowledge of Windows and MS Office with intermediate Excel proficiency is required


  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Payroll industry experience required with working knowledge of payroll, wage and tax laws and regulations required

  • 2 years of supervisory experience required

  • -Or- an equivalent combination of education and/or experience

  • Position may require occasional travel
