Job Description

The Chief Quality Officer will be responsible to provide executive leadership, direction, guidance, and assistance on clinical quality measurement and improvement related to the Ministry Market in a manner which is consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the Ministry Market, Ascension and its Sponsors and the Virtuous Servant Leadership. The CQO will work as a collaboratively with the Market Chief Medical Officer, the Market Chief Nursing Officer, the Michigan Ascension Medical Group Leadership, and other operational roles in support of the Clinically Integrated System of Care.


It is assumed that all duties and responsibilities will be performed in a manner which is consistent with the mission and reflects the Core Values of Ascension: Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity, and Dedication. These responsibilities include :

  • Passionate about Clinical Quality, Safety, and High reliability, and able to inspire others with that vision.

  • Content matter expert in continuous process improvement methodologies.

  • Sophisticated skills in data analytics as applied to continuous process improvement and clinical quality metrics.

  • Tracks established Care Excellence metrics for quality/ safety/experience performance within owned sites of care

  • Works with the Chief Clinical Officer to implement the quality/safety/experience performance improvement plan in owned sites of care (e.g. facilities)

  • Working with the Chief Clinical Officer, drives implementation of clinical processes within owned sites of care

  • Working with the Chief Operating Officer, drives implementation of new patient/member experience models in owned sites of care (e.g. facilities)

  • As called on, supports clinically reliable process pilots

  • Provides input to Care Excellence on processes to design and on the design and implementation approach for clinically reliable processes

  • Provides input to the Chief Clinical Officer regarding the plan for in-market implementation of clinically reliable processes

  • Provides input to Care Excellence on elements of patient/member experience to redesign and on the design of new patient/member experience models

  • Provides input to the Chief Operating Officer on plan for in-market implementation of new patient/member experience models

  • Works with Clinical Leadership to optimize specialty care delivery


  • Ensures that market performance is aligned with Ascension’s practices and standards of excellence and recommends interventions necessary to improve performance.

  • The CQO directly manages various roles which could include the following: Vice Presidents/Directors of Quality at local Ministries

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or clinical healthcare field. Master’s degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or relevant discipline OR

  • Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from an accredited school of medicine. Board Certification and medical license.

  • Preferred - Certificated Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or Certification in Health Care Quality and Management (HCQM)

  • A minimum of 10 years of direct clinical experience in area of professional practice/licensure

  • A minimum of 5 years demonstrated outcome-oriented administrative and leadership experience in a highly complex, multi-site facility and/or multi-site care delivery model.

  • Strong influencing skills and the capability to collaborate with stakeholders at every level.

  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills – ability to communicate succinctly and effectively across all levels of the organization.

  • Project management skills and the ability to act independently and responsibly in a fast-moving environment.

  • Problem solving—the individual identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner and gathers and analyzes information skillfully.

  • Delegation—the individual delegates work assignments, gives authority to work independently, sets expectations and monitors delegated activities.

  • Leadership—the individual inspires and motivates others to perform well, accepts feedback from others and is able to build an effective culture.

  • Management skills—the individual includes staff in planning, decision-making, facilitating and process improvement; makes oneself available to staff; provides regular performance feedback; and develops subordinates’ skills and encourages growth.

  • Quality management—the individual looks for ways to improve and promote quality and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
