The Vector Core of the University of Michigan is seeking a Research Specialist Lead to develop and run the subcloning and plasmid repository arms of the Core. Extensive experience in advanced molecular biology techniques including a variety of subcloning techniques, gene expression analysis, and mutagenesis is required. Expertise in writing SOPs/Protocols to ensure reproducible assay results is also required. Experience communicating with clients via email and in person to plan experimental design is essential. Working knowledge of viral vector systems, including lentivirus and adenovirus, and gene editing using CRISPR/Cas9 techniques is highly desired. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success troubleshooting problems related to molecular biology techniques. Proficiency in communicating results in writing and with the Vector Core team at meetings is also of utmost importance.
Handle inquiries from potential customers regarding plasmid vector design offered by the Core, any method development needed to construct customer’s vectors, and/or costs and timelines for project completion
Generating maps and sequence reports for clients as requested, and associated administrative duties
Meet with clients to explain vector constructs, contribute to experimental research design and planning for future studies
Laboratory Support & Oversight
Develop and maintain subcloning services and plasmid repository.
Implement quality assurance for subcloning and repository services.
Work collaboratively with Vector Core team to offer support and technical advice on CRISPR/Cas9 techniques, lentivirus, adenovirus and AAV production and quality control.
Work proficiently with computer software to maintain large databases, and write reports detailing procedures, results and cost-analyses.
Follow standard operating procedures set by the Vector Core and BRCF for day to day duties, including DEI training.
Communicate and collaborate effectively and efficiently to deliver on-time and high quality results
Work as a key member and contributor to a larger Vector Core team
Assay Analysis & Presentation of Data
Analyze nucleic acid sequences with a variety of software packages and integrate new tools into the data analysis pipeline
Prepare and present results and outcomes for internal/external professional audiences
• Participate in the training of staff.
• Develop Standard Operating Procedures and training documents
Ph.D. in molecular biology or equivalent life science
Expertise in vector design, analysis and production, including non-viral and viral vectors.
6-10 years’ experience in vector design in a production facility.
Extensive experience with software to maintain databases, analyze sequencing, and other data analyses programs.
