Global Propulsion Systems Analytical Laboratory Chemist

TheGlobal Propulsion Systems Analytical Laboratory Chemistat General Motors has responsibility for chemical analysis ofmaterials with a variety of analytical instrumentation, and in particular Comprehensive 2D Gas Chromatographic (GC×GC) Instrumentation coupled with flame ionization detection (FID), nitrogen-phosphorus detection (NPD), and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS).This includes most or all of the following specific responsibilities:

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Analyze automotive materials and components with analytical chemistry methodology and instrumentation.
  • Fundamental understanding of chemistry related analytical methods and methods development.
  • Work with internal and external (industry) chemistry analytical teams to develop thorough understanding of materials to support Product Teams.
  • Support GM worldwide with build and warranty problems.
  • Work with Platforms and Product Teams to develop chemical measurement technology necessary to support GM products worldwide.
  • Understanding of chemical properties, chemicals, and interactions with component hardware, and sampling and analysis techniques to characterize materials.
  • Consult with stakeholders and technical teams as recognized chemical measurement expert.
  • Execute functional requirements independent (minimal) of Manager’s direction.
  • Utilize skills for chemistry related problem solving.
  • Analyze, diagnose, and recommend/implement changes based on analytical lab test data.
  • Design, develop, and implement improved industry tests to correlate and assure the highest quality products are available for GM customers.
  • Write technical reports and do presentations within and outside GM.
  • ROI and patent submissions.

Required Education and Experience:

  • BS in Chemistry (MS, and or PhD preferred).
  • Previous work experience within automotive, petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical or related industry.
  • Minimum 2-5 years chemistry experience.
  • Experience understanding chemical industries, product properties and manufacturing processes.
  • Project management experience, including managing of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Work well both independently and on teams.
  • Expertise and/or detailed knowledge of chemical analysis techniques.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience and technical expertise with Comprehensive 2D Gas Chromatographic (GC×GC) Instrumentation coupled with flame ionization detection (FID), nitrogen-phosphorus detection (NPD), and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS).
  • Experience with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry, Thermal Analysis Methodology (DSC, TGA, DMA, and TMA), Qualitative Chemical Analysis, and Microscopy.
  • Peer reviewed publications in SAE and other
